PAOLINELLI FOR THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

The former Minister of Agriculture, Alysson Paolinelli, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize of 2021. The nomination was protocoled in the Norwegian Nobel Committee on the January 22, by Prof. Durval Dourado Neto, Director of the “Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture, from the University of São Paulo (Esalq/ USP). The nomination received 119 letters of support representing 24 countries.

The Academy (education and research) and the primary sector were the biggest supporters, but the recognition shown by industry and services institutions also stands out.

The director of ESALQ emphasizes that the nomination of the former Minister is based “on his enormous contribution to peace, due to the great leap in Brazilian food production”. As he says, this increase was obtained in a sustainable way, promoting growth, social inclusion and food safety in Brazil and abroad.

Professor Durval highlights the view of academics and policy formulators: “Paolinelli has always been obstinate in valuing science, research and technical assistance for farmers”. He is a visionary and had predicted since the 1960s that the future depended on the transformation of traditional agriculture. He promoted a new era in tropical food production and its socioeconomic, sustainability and human development impacts are still present today.

One of the nomination leaders, the former Minister Roberto Rodrigues, adds: “Paolinelli is the greatest Brazilian alive, he is the visionary of sustainable tropical agricultural revolution that took place in Brazil. He is a great builder of peace, because food is peace, sustainability is peace”.
